Film Club which meets every Wednesday afternoon in room 206, is open to all students from grades 9-12. The club works to create a fun and safe space for everyone — no matter their level of experience — to discuss films and help young filmmakers uncover their talents and share their work.
Every meeting, students discuss movies they’ve all watched independently. The exact films can be any genre, and are nominated by voted on by members the meeting before. Discussions are a great opportunity to socialize and get other peoples’ perspectives on films. All members, whether they’ve watched the weekly film or not, are welcome to take part in discussions — or just enjoy a snack.
The club’s officers and its advisor, Mr. Novak, are always working to help students open up about their ideas and opinions on different movies. For example, this year, they’ve started asking members to write their thoughts on a Google Form, so they can use those notes to encourage better conversations. “We hope to create a culture of film here at MHS, and to promote the art and craft of film,” said Mr. Novak. “We want to encourage an interest and love of film, and to support the young filmmakers here.”
Beyond their weekly discussions, the club also holds their annual Film Festival in spring where students can showcase the films they have created themselves. This school year will be Manhasset’s third year hosting the Festival. Students aren’t required to have any special technology in order to participate — all you need is a plan and a camera. Mr. Novak, along with many other faculty members of the English Department, have made significant contributions to the Film Festival, encouraging students who’re interested in technology, drama, and art to make a film.
Every year the Film Club gets better, with new members developing new interests in the arts of film and receiving support from their peers on filmmaking. To join, email Mr. Novak at [email protected].
