Moana Review

Disney nailed it again with its newest movie musical, Moana! This movie was about a teenage girl named Moana, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, who lives on an island and feels constantly drawn to the water. However, Moana is forbidden from entering the water she cares so deeply for because of the danger that lies beyond. Moana eventually leaves the island on a boat, despite warnings for her to stay, and sets off to find Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson. Maui is a demigod that stole the heart of Te Fiti, another island nearby. Because of this, the island that Moana and her family live on is dying. Moana convinces Maui to help her return the heart of Te Fiti in order to save her own island. The movie is full of action, comedy, and catchy songs written by Lin Manuel Miranda, writer of the hit musical Hamilton.

Disney does an amazing job portraying the culture of the Polynesians in the movie. The songs have deep connections to traditional Polynesian music and actress Auli’i Cravalho does a phenomenal job singing. She is actually Polynesian and at 16 years old, she is similar in age to Moana in the movie. It was also very cool to hear Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson sing, as he surprised many people with his musical talent as well.

Moana is a fantastic movie that is entertaining for all ages and is a great way to spend your three day weekend!
