Science research is an elective program at Manhasset High school where students grades 9-12 study and perform research on different topics including but not limited to environmental science, chemistry, physics, and engineering. There are 3 different classes within the science research program: Introduction to Science Research (grades 9 and 10), Advanced Science Research (Grades 10 and 11), and STS Preparation (grade 12).
Students conduct research projects from start to finish designing their own methodology, and carrying out trials in Manhasset’s very own science research lab.
In order to prepare for these fairs, the science research program holds the science expo. On Monday, March 4th, this event took place in the cafeteria at Manhasset High School. For students this presents an opportunity for the fairs which are going to take place in upcoming weeks.
At the expo there are 5 different rounds where students have a possibility of being judged. The seniors and the juniors judge the underclassman based on a similar rubric that most science research fairs use, in order to stimulate real life conditions.
Members from the science honor society joined, to learn more about what their community is doing in the STEM field. The electricity in the room was palpable as teachers, parents, and students alike walked around enthralled with the next generation of scientists’ work.
Some of these projects included studying alzheimers in worms, to the effects of pH levels on coastal erosion.
Most recently the Manhasset Science Program has produced two International Science and Engineering Fair qualifiers, a highly prestigious competition. These two students will travel to LA to compete with the best of the best, for the chance to win upwards of $70,
000. In addition Jack Voelker, was announced as an Science Talent Search Finalists, a nationwide search for the brightest seniors conducting research, where he won not only money for himself, but also for the school.
All of the participants in this program have worked very hard to complete and study their specific projects. We wish them the best of luck on their upcoming fairs!
