Trump’s Wall
On Wednesday, January 25th, 2017, Donald Trump announced an executive order that would divert federal resources to creating a wall on the border between the United States and Mexico. Donald Trump proposed the creation of this wall back at the start of his campaign in 2016 as a way of preventing illegal immigrants from coming into the United States and “stealing” American jobs and as a way to also decrease the number of American deaths due to people living illegally in the United States. However, this wall has sparked massive controversy as many people deem the border wall as racist and xenophobic. Many Mexicans see the wall as an attempt to dismantle families and hinder ordinary people from trying to seek more opportunities in the United States. Another aspect of the wall that has sparked even more controversy is that the cost of the nearly 2,000 mile long wall is estimated to cost billions of dollars, and Donald Trump claims that Mexico is going to pay for the whole thing. In regards to this claim, the Mexican government has said that they will by no means pay for this wall. Donald Trump is expected to have further discussions with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto towards the end of the month concerning these new American policies.
