Huamo (or creative bun) is a type of bun that is decorated with all sorts of different intricate patterns. Not only is it edible, but it’s also a type of Chinese folk art that is quite well-known! They have many themes like animals, insects, flowers and are mostly used for celebrating holidays, marriages, and birthdays.

Although the food has had a long and complicated history, the process of making it is rather simple (if you already know what to do, that is). It’s mainly made out of flour and other complementing ingredients like beans and jujube. The tools required for huamo include scissors, combs, and chopsticks.

If you’re interested in learning how to make this creative food, sign up for the Lunar New Year festival presentation on Tuesday February 9th! The event is best for students from 7th to 12th grade, or a younger child with adult supervision. Even if you are not a talented cook and the huamo is not coming out well, you’ll still be able to have some fun fooling around with dough and designing a silly looking bun.
