On Sunday, January 8th, 2017, the Manhasset American Red Cross Club hosted a first aid event at the Plandome Fire Department.  The newly created club acquired volunteers to help teach a first aid class to Girl Scouts so that the girls could receive their first aid badges.  At the event, Red Cross Club volunteers went through various scenarios with the Girl Scouts who practiced first aid techniques on one another.  In addition, the Girl Scouts learned how to properly care for a person in the event of an emergency.  They also learned about various medical professions from vascular surgeons, oncologists, and EMTs.  Guests included Dr. Thomas Panetta, Dr. Daggubati, Dr. Prashanti Atluri, EMT Lieutenant Robert Stern, EMT Sandy Cobden, and EMT Xander Haber.

An ambulance was also brought in from the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department and the Girl Scouts were able to walk inside.  The girls learned about each piece of equipment in the ambulance and how to properly operate medical equipment in case they ever had the responsibility of applying first aid.  At the end of the event, each Girl Scout was given a Red Cross zip kit, or first aid kit, so that they could have the necessary equipment to help others when the time comes.

The Manhasset American Red Cross Club has planned out several other events this upcoming year including an event about home fire campaigns where Manhasset students can help teach people about home fire safety and assist in the installation of fire alarms in residents’ homes.  The club is off to a great start and will continue to provide aid to those in need.
