Manhasset Theatre’s Take on a Disney Classic: High School Musical
Manhasset High School’s theatre production of High School Musical premiered on Friday, June 4th with additional shows on June 5th at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and on June 6th at 2:00 p.m. Viewing was available by streaming for those who bought tickets.
High School Musical follows the tale of two young high schoolers: Troy Bolton (Kieran Fink), a star basketball player from East High and Gabriella Montez (Morgan Grygiel), an intellectually gifted new transfer student. The two meet at a New Year’s party where they sing karaoke together, hitting it off. When vacation ends, they return back to school; Troy is surprised to see Gabriella who is a new transfer student. To rekindle their bond, the two audition for the upcoming musical. Their close relationship and theatrical talent irritates the popular thespian Sharpay Evans (Melina Zarboulas) and her brother Ryan (Owen Schwartz) who scheme to bring about their downfall. Troy and Gabriella struggle to balance theatre and their past commitments.
Though this certainly has been a rollercoaster of a year, this Manhasset production perfectly encompassed the Disney classic that many of us grew up watching.
It is important to note that the theatre directors have taken every step necessary to ensure the wellbeing of the cast and crew: masks were worn at nearly all times of the show, and the audio had been recorded ahead of time.
Dance numbers were wonderfully synchronized due to the spectacular work of choreographer Victoria DiCarlo. Individual actor’s’ skills were put on display like in the iconic “Bop To The Top,” and group numbers shone a light on all other cast members like in “We’re All In This Together.” Wonderfully staged by director Robb Fessler, the streamed show encompassed numerous aspects of a live show. Of course, this show would not have been possible without the terrific work of the crew.
This phenomenal theatrical performance reminds us of crucial lessons: the show must go on, and we’re all in this together.
