April 28, 2015
This interview is with the amiable and intelligent Cathy Hu, a senior in the Manhasset High School Class of 2015, a National Merit finalist, and a student in the University of Chicago Class of 2019.
How would you describe yourself?
I’d describe myself as pretty easy going and friendly. I’m not necessarily hardworking in everything but if there’s a subject or class I really like I’ll work harder.
What are some of your hobbies?
Sometimes playing piano helps me relieve stress, and I like to hang out with my friends a lot.
What were your extracurriculars throughout your high school career?
I was in a variety of school clubs, including Mock Trial, Science Olympiad, and Phoenix–which I was treasurer in. I also played the piano.
What goals have you accomplished in your high school career?
I’d say academically I’m glad I kept up with my work. I’m also glad I got to make bonds with a lot of my friends.
What are your current goals?
My goals are definitely to graduate high school and take the memories I made here to college and work on being a better version of myself as I get older.
What college are you going to attend and why did you choose that school?
I’m going to the University of Chicago. I like the atmosphere there and when I visited I liked the students and faculty.
What do you want to major in?
Economics.
What do you want to do when you’re older?
I’m not sure, but I’m leaning towards entrepreneurship.
What is your greatest achievement?
Balancing academic clubs and work.
What motivates you to do well?
The idea of perseverance and following through with what I do and not quitting, as well as my friends and family, motivate me.
Who was your favorite teacher in Manhasset?
I don’t have one favorite teacher. I really liked Ms. Law, Dr. Dorman, Ms. Untracht, and Mr. Faraci. I admired Dr. Dorman’s knowledge and I enjoyed being in these teachers’ classes.
What was your greatest difficulty?
Physics C.
What will you miss most about Manhasset?
I’ll miss the atmosphere, my friends, family, and the teachers. And the bagels (haha).
What is your advice for upcoming juniors and seniors?
Don’t think too much; rather, take baby steps. There is no need to over-stress, and don’t compare yourself to others.
What do you look forward to in college?
I’m looking forward to making new friends, getting to know a lot of international students, trying different activities, etc.
