TikTok: A Congressional Controversy
TikTok is a daily communication and entertainment app where millions of people worldwide post and share their daily lives, used by teenagers and adults all over the world as either a fun hobby or a full-time job.
However, it is currently involved in a tight dilemma with the U.S. Congress, which is cracking down on the app and leaving many users worried if it will be shut down altogether. Congress believes TikTok needs to strengthen its security system for the safety of an individual’s private information. This issue was brought to court, where Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, gave his testimony of the situation and cleared up the controversy surrounding the app.
Congress accused TikTok of secretly leaking information on the American government to China, along with spying on individuals through the wifi networks. Chew gave his analysis of the situation and spoke against these preposterous claims. He claimed that the app gives freedom of speech to millions of people across the world, and he denied several accusations regarding relations with China and genocidal intentions. The final decision for Tiktok is still undetermined as the debates continue.
With this controversy, teenagers are enraged by the reckless and racist behavior of the representatives. They believe that the claims and accusations were specifically targeted toward political issues rather than for the “safety” of many people on the Internet. Some argue that TikTok isn’t the only social-media app that has security issue– apps like Facebook and Twitter have similar issues, yet Congress isn’t emphasizing those problems. The uproar against Congress’ actions built an immense amount of support for the TikTok CEO, starting a trend on tiktok under the #zaddy.
To many, TikTok is a source of entertainment and communication with friends and family. Additionally, many teens get their daily, unfiltered news through the app. Some even find comfort for their depression and anxiety through the encouragement videos in the community. It has grown to become a symbol of individuality, unity, and freedom of speech for every user. TikTok is a significant part of young teens’ lives, and it has made a huge impact on the younger generation in the years.
