With Earth Day 2024 fast approaching, Manhasset students need to take a step back and reflect on the advancements that have been made toward environmental protection worldwide, fuelling the fire for further action toward a happier planet. Since its establishment in 1970, Earth Day has acted as a yearly prompt for humans to prioritize sustainability and safeguard our shared home. This year’s “Restore Our Earth” theme is unique, highlighting the need to address environmental issues and move towards a healthier Earth.
Many efforts have recently been made to accelerate the fight against climate change and promote more conservation. Nations worldwide have taken steps in their commitment to lower the use of greenhouse gasses, setting ultimate goals to reach carbon neutrality. This is being attained through renewable energy such as solar and wind power, both gaining popularity and contributing to the clean energy movement.
Although these positive developments are leading us in the right direction, environmental struggles should still be at the forefront of our minds. Climate change impacts are becoming more prevalent and can be noticed through more frequent extreme weather events. One example of this is the earthquake we recently experienced here in Manhasset!
Rapid action is necessary to strengthen the resilience of our earth and increase adaptation measures. As we commemorate Earth Day, it is vital to implement individual and universal action to promote positive change. No matter the person or circumstance, it is always possible to reduce energy consumption, limit the production of waste, and show more interest in sustainable business practices.
Manhasset also plays a significant role in cultivating a culture of environmental awareness, which can be seen through various extracurricular activities. According to Mr. Ardito, a teacher at Manhasset and faculty advisor of the Green Club, “We are always trying to find ways to contribute to the awareness of Earth Day and are trying to think sustainably and to think of ways to have Manhasset also be sustainable.” Manhasset Green Club consistently works toward establishing a healthier Earth, promoting the environmental education of young adults. Access to this club allows those involved to make more informed, mindful decisions about their treatment of the planet.
On Earth Day, it is important to reinforce the necessity of commitment to the environment’s overall well-being. Through school opportunities such as participating in the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce Clean Up on April 22, we can unite as a community and overcome prevalent environmental challenges. Let us foster a reality where nature is healthy and thriving, allowing us to protect the planet we call home for generations to come. As you enjoy your spring break, wherever you may be, take a moment on April 24th to consider the power of our planet and all it does for us.
