Both the New York Mets and Yankees are in the league championship series, with the Mets playing the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Yankees playing the Cleveland Guardians. How great would it be if the Mets and Yankees play each other in the World Series? Think about all the trash talk in the school hallways, the comradery of the fans, Judge vs. Lindor, and our teachers wearing the caps of their team. And don’t forget how crowded Manhasset train station will be with all those non-Manhasset people going to the game by train. Oh yeah and driving traffic too .
The last time we had a subway series was in 2000, when the Yankees beat the Mets in 5 games as Mike Piazza just missed a home run to tie the game against the best closer of all time Mariano (MO) Rivera in the final game 5. Prior to that, the last subway series was all the way back in 1956 when the Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was the last time the Brooklyn Dodgers played a World Series in Brooklyn before they moved to Los Angeles.
The other interesting thing about a possible subway series is that it would be the first time since 2001 that the top two highest payroll teams go to the World Series. The last time that happened was in 2001, when the Yankees (highest payroll team) lost in 7 games to the Arizona Diamondbacks (second highest payroll team). Yankee fans still suffer from that loss to this day!
