A Trip to Cyprus

October 25, 2015

If you enjoy white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, Cypriot culture, and a place where the sun never sets, then you will love vacationing in Cyprus.

Cyprus is an island that is about 1,117 miles off of Greece, but it depends on where you are coming from. There are many activities to do in Cyprus for all different kinds of people. If you like laying on the beach and doing different excursions like parasailing, then Cyprus is the place to go. If you want to experience the rich culture of Cyprus, you can visit one of the old monasteries where monks still live. On this vacation, you will be able to relax, enjoy family time, and embark on fun day trips. Come on, grab your passports, and let’s go!

In Cyprus, it’s almost impossible to do day trips because nobody ever wants to leave the beach. The minute your feet touch the ground you finally feel like you’re in paradise. The first few nights might be a little difficult with the time difference, so the beach is highly recommended. On the beach you can unwind from your stress, lay back, and soak up the warmth of the sun. Reading your favorite novel on a lounge chair will make you feel like you’re in heaven. Unwinding on the lounge chair is only one of the many things you can do. Once it starts to get really hot, you can jump into the crystal clear water. The water absorbs so much heat from the sun that when you go in, it will make you feel even more relaxed. Make sure to bring goggles because if you look underwater, you will see an abundance of hermit crabs. At many of the hotels, there are so many exciting things going on that you don’t even have to leave the hotel; for example, there’s jet skiing, tube riding, and even boating.

Cyprus is known for having a very rich and authentic culture. If you don’t rent a car, don’t worry because there are many inexpensive bus tours that can take you almost anywhere. A common tourist attraction is the monastery in Kykkos, which is on the peak of a mountain. Although it sounds crazy and intimidating, it is perfectly safe. It’s very old and has so many beautiful sights to see. Every corner you turn, there is a new surprise. You can see monks doing what they have been doing for thousand of years. You can also pray and pay your respects here. Aphrodite’s Rock, which is an unusual, but surreal location, is said to have been the place that Aphrodite, the Goddess of Beauty, arose from the sea and came to life. The Rock is not the point, it’s the story behind it that makes it such a memorable place to visit.

One of the best parts of being in Cyprus is being able to experience the amazing Cypriot cuisine. There are so many restaurants located in Mackenzie and Finikoudes (phinecouthes), another town of Cyprus. In Mackenzie, one of the most highly recommended and popular restaurants is Miligi’s. At Miligi’s they have all the iconic Cypriot food, such as bourgoudi (bulgar) and pork souvlaki. The pork souvlaki melts in your mouth the minute it touches your taste buds. Some other great restaurants are Vlaho’s Tavern, Limni (lake), Maria’s, and The Grapevine. Even with all this savory food, Cyprus is known best for its sweet desserts. For example, the shamishi (a light and airy phylo dough stuffed with a semolina filling) or bourekia (a delectable, fried dough with a cheese or sweet filling doused in honey or powdered sugar). These finger licking foods are what make Cyprus so well-known for its desserts.

Cyprus is a trip that is worth every last penny. With the white sandy beaches, turquoise water, intriguing culture, and mouthwatering food, Cyprus is the place to visit. A trip to Cyprus will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
