Humans of Manhasset
Students in Manhasset High School’s English 10 Regents classes recently completed a “Humans of Manhasset” portfolio project where they created photojournalistic features highlighting the humanity of Manhasset. These pieces can be found on display in the Manhasset Secondary School Art Gallery.
The photographs attempt to show the unique traits of the “human condition.” The “human condition” has been described in literature as the irreducible, more inherent part of humanity, which includes concerns such as the meaning of life, the search for gratification, the sense of curiosity, the inevitability of isolation, or even the simple awareness regarding the inescapability of death. Overall, this project, originally inspired by the Humans of New York project, lends an eye to the larger world to preview everyday life.
The gallery showcases six pieces—authors unspecified. All of the pieces follow the same format: three candid photos of people in their day-to-day life with a black frame accompanied by a quote from the person. The quotes offer valuable insights into that person’s perspective on life, further demonstrating the innate ability to think deeply and provide advice.
The first person featured in this project is the middle school librarian, Mrs. Moody, who encourages people to always stay true to themselves. Next is junior Rashaun Gardner who gave his two cents on how to interact in a large group of friends. Lastly, beloved security guard, Ed, was displayed as someone who strives to make school an environment for everyone.
It goes without saying that this project provided everyone with a worthwhile look into the people of Manhasset. Check it out to see the other impressive pieces put together by students!
