The Success of Wonder Woman
As some of you may know, D.C. Comics just released their newest film: Wonder Woman. This glass ceiling-shattering movie is highly regarded and praised (receiving a Rotten Tomato score of 94%) for being one of the first solo-female empowering superhero movies.
The film follows the origin story of Wonder Woman. Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana is sheltered from the real world until she meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that’s raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat and save the world, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her true destiny and identity and embraces her role as Wonder Woman.
I was fortunate enough to see it on opening night and was quickly blown away. Witty, clever, funny with serious undertones and, pardon my French, badass – the movie is brilliantly written, acted and produced. It was the perfect introduction and explanation of Diana Prince’s character arc, with clever ties back to the modern universe (for D.C.’s upcoming Justice League film). It not only served to successfully drum up some enthusiasm for the D.C. universe, but it served as an empowering film for young girls and women. Other studios, in particular D.C.’s main competitor (Marvel) should definitely take note. Incredible and empowering, Wonder Woman is definitely one I recommend to quickly check out. It is currently playing in theaters near you!
