Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – An Excellent Kick-Off!
The marvel cinematic universe has finally released the first movie of Phase 5! Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the sequel following Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly). This film officially introduced the Quantum Realm, a place where time and space do not exist, through their accidental adventure. Through astonishing visuals, enhanced creativity, action-packed fighting scenes, and the occasional comedy, it is safe to say that this movie brought an excellent kick-start for the next phase of the marvel universe.
The opening scene begins with Janet Van Dyne’s first encounter with Kang, an “exiled” traveler trapped in the Quantum Realm. From there, the plot “blips” back to the present, where Scott is currently a memoirist living happily with his family. During a family dinner, Scott accidentally found out that Cassie was working on a device that can send signals down to the Quantum Realm. Cassie demonstrates how the device works and explains how the signal will be able to give them more information on the Quantum Realm. However, during the demo, things get a little hairy. While the rest of the family was bewildered by the sudden reaction, an energy blast burst out of the device, whisking the entire family through a portal and into the Quantum Realm.
Through the unfortunate separation of the family, we’re introduced to Kang the Conqueror. Janet finally reveals that she unknowingly assisted Kang in recharging his multiversal travel core. Before he could fully regain his power, Janet accidentally reads into his mind and past memories, revealing that he murdered trillions of people in multiple timelines. Even though Janet is overpowered by Kang, she uses her Pym particles to expand his core beyond use. With the fact that Kang was unable to escape the realm, he decided to turn the prison into his empire.
In this escapade, marvel fans meet new characters such as Lord Krylar and Jentorra along with the old enemy Darren Cross. The concept of quantum travel dives deeper as the separated family tries to find each other again in the madness surrounding them. The character development of Scott Lang is evidently shown as he tries to protect Cassie in the new and unknown environment. Each family member plays an important role in the fight against Kang as the spotlight transfers from one to another throughout the film, a characteristic that was very creative from Marvel.
Although the beginning of the film felt rushed as the scenes continuously flickered between Scott, Cassie, Hope, Janet, and Hank, the rest of the story progresses perfectly after the two groups finally reunite and fight against Kang in a typical marvel manner. The battle scenes reflect how the classic duo of Ant-Man and the Wasp work together against Kang’s forces, along with the special appearance of a possible new and upcoming super hero. Adding on, Hank’s experiment with ants contributed to this battle and created a huge playcard against Kang’s army.
Overall, this was an excellent way to present the Quantum Realm and how it will continue to play a role in the upcoming marvel projects. The visuals and 3-dimensional projections of the Realm makes it exciting and satisfying to watch, along with the endless apprehension of the unknown. As shown, the movie continued to build the past concepts of quantum-travel in Avengers Endgame and the multiverse from Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Kang is an inevitable villain throughout Phase 5 and 6, and there is no doubt that Scott and Kang will meet again in the future.
