Marvel’s highly anticipated movie, “Black Widow”, has been postponed once again due to the pandemic, now releasing on July 9, 2021. This time, with the disapproval of the release on streaming services from theatres. 

“Black Widow” is expected to be a phenomenal film, directed by Cate Shortland and featuring a cast with Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz. Disney Plus tweeted about the release.

The movie also is a flashback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than a continuation, and it will be taking place in the timeline after “Captain America: Civil War”’ and before “Avengers: Infinity War”. The release comes two years after the last Marvel Cinematic Universe film release, “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, which had been released in July 2019. 

As the synopsis reveals, in Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff -also known as Black Widow- confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. 

Disney’s new movies: Emma Stone’s “Cruella” and Scarlett Johansson’s “Black Widow” have been the hot topic of discussion lately. The two movies are supposedly being released in theaters, but not exclusively. Disney+ plans to release both movies on their release dates on Disney Plus for an additional Premier fee of $30. They had also released “Soul”, “Raya and the Last Dragon”, and “Mulan” in a similar fashion. 

The movie industry is not in favor of this, as it takes industry away from them. Hollywood built up streaming during the pandemic, while theaters sat dormant, losing millions. The industry has been struggling since the beginning of the pandemic and is looking to start making money again now, because of the rapid vaccine distribution. With the hope to start the business up again, streaming movies lessons their viewership. Disney has not yet decided to officially comment on this. Nonetheless, they did mention that they believed the “Black Widow” streaming release decision would please the consumers as it would give more options and flexibility. Moreover, it supposedly reflected their preferences. 

On the other hand, AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. Chief Executive Adam Aron spoke about “Black Widow” in a press release. “We haven’t made any threats … it is widely known that AMC has threatened not to play movies if we could not find business terms that we found acceptable”  This hints at a possible dispute between the two regarding the release of the movie. 

With all that in mind, “Black Widow” is expected to be an astounding movie. Go check it out, in theaters or at home!
