Blue Neighbourhood by Troye Sivan
On December 4th, 2015 Troye Sivan released his newest work, an album titled Blue Neighborhood. This is the first full-length album by Sivan, a well-known YouTuber who has previously released 4 EPs and 3 singles.
The album deals primarily with growing up, and especially how that affects relationships. His struggle with his sexuality is also very evident, especially in the songs Wild, Fools, and Talk Me Down. These songs make up the “Blue Neighborhood Trilogy,” a series of three music videos that tell a heartbreaking story about homophobia and intolerance. Although the music videos might seem specific to people that are part of the LGBT+ community, they (and the rest of the songs on the album) have themes that appeal to everyone. Most of his songs are about how relationships that you once took for granted become complicated as you grow older.
The album’s sound is similar to Sivan’s previous singles and EPs, using lots of synth combined with excellent piano and guitar riffs. Personally, I love his sound and this album. I’ve had Fools stuck in my head since it came out and Heaven (featuring Betty Who) stands out as a particularly strong song.
Blue Neighborhood has been incredibly successful thus far. Currently, it is at #15 on the iTunes charts and the three music videos that have been released have garnered over 20 million views on YouTube. The success has been influenced significantly by Sivan’s YouTube fame. Most of Troye’s 3.7 million subscribers support his music career and the support from other famous YouTube stars have also boosted the album’s popularity. However, even without that support, I’m sure the album would have done well because of its emotional depth and excellent production quality.
This album is just the beginning of a long and successful career for the incredibly talented Troye Sivan.
