The Met Gala, which is always held on the first Monday in May, is not only for the A-List celebrities to walk the red carpet but also to raise money for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Met Gala is known for being an extremely exclusive event, attended by only high-profile and carefully selected guests by Anna Wintour herself. 

This year the Met Gala theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” but who is Karl Lagerfeld? Lagerfeld is a designer who controlled famous designer brands such as Chanel, Fendi, and his own designer line. He passed away in 2019 from pancreatic death. His death has left a long lasting impact on the fashion world, and it is important for his legacy to be remembered. 

The Met Gala has been referred to as the “Super Bowl of Fashion,” and millions of people watched as the famous guests made their ways up the iconic Met steps. This year, the celebrity attendees were asked to dress in honor of Karl Lagerfeld. There were custom ensembles that paid homage to Lagerfeld’s design signatures, such as his Chanel tweeds and his black and white uniform. This year’s Met Gala co-hosts were Penelope Cruz, Muchaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour.

Each year at the Met Gala, a select few guests are awarded with best dressed. This year, those who found distinct ways to honor a signature Lagerfeld look with pearls, bows, or tweeds were awarded with best dressed. Nicole Kidman wore a pink Chanel couture gown that Lagerfeld designed for her in 2004, when she starred in a Chanel No. 5 commercial. This showed that rewearing fashion can have a chic end result. Olivia Wilde wore a Chloe dress that reinterpreted a violin-themed dress that Lagerfeld created for Chanel in 1983. In addition, Phoebe Bridgers wore an elegant Tory Burch gown outlined in pearls. Jeremy Pope wore an extra-long Balmain cape that had a train that extended down the carpet to reveal an image of Lagerfeld on it. Finally, the most memorable moment of the night was when Rihanna and Asap Rocky arrived on the carpet. Rihanna wore a white Valentino look complete with a floral cocoon cape. Asap Rocky wore a black blazer, kilt and bedazzled jeans.

The Met Gala is an extremely special event that only top-tier celebrities can attend. It awes the fashion world, and the spectators love to discuss the guests’ outfits and formulate their own opinions.
