Fate: The Winx Saga is a live action reimagining of the beloved children’s show Winx Club on Netflix. Created by Brian Young and Iginio Straffi, Fate: The Winx Saga stars Abigail Cowen as Bloom, Elisha Applebaum as Musa, Hannah van der Westhuysen as Stella, Eliot Salt as Terra, and Precious Mustapha as Aisha. 

Bloom lives in the human world or “first world” and believes that she is human until she causes a horrific accident with her powers. This leads to a powerful fairy finding her and persuading her to attend Althea, a boarding school for fairies in the otherworld. The show follows Bloom as she learns about her powers and makes friends with other fairies while dark forces start resurfacing after decades of peace. 

Fate: The Winx Saga has gotten mixed reactions from viewers. Many fans of the original show were disappointed by the show’s deviation from the plot and the cheerful aesthetic of the original show. People were also upset about the replacement of original Winx Club member Flora, a woman of color, with Terra, a white woman, and the casting of Musa, a clearly east Asain character, as a white-passing woman. Others, however, are advocating for the show by praising the fact that there was at least some diversity. Many people were also impressed by the creators’ abilities to adapt this children’s show for a more mature audience. 

This series is very entertaining once you stop comparing it to the original Winx Club. The show is more reminiscent of the CW hit series Riverdale or other Netflix original series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina than the cartoon that it is based on. People looking for a similar show to the original Winx Club will not find what they are looking for in this show, but people looking for dark teen dramas will thoroughly enjoy it.
