Don’t just watch the news — make it! Join the Manhasset Broadcasting Company and help bring stories and events from our community to life, one episode at a time.
MBC is a club open to all students, from grades 7 through 12, who want to explore video production, from filming and editing to scriptwriting and broadcasting. The club works to create the school’s very own TV shows, highlighting news, events, and stories that give the Manhasset community a pop of color.
MBC members learn about video camera use, scriptwriting, editing, storyboarding, lighting, sound and production, and more. In the end, you’ll see the amazing morning television show that you created for the school to watch: Good Morning Manhasset, which airs weekly and covers school and community news, and Set Sports, a biweekly sports show focused on school athletics.
Each episode of Good Morning Manhasset, around five-minutes long, has two anchor reports and two news packages — but it takes a village to make an episode. MBC has 18 members on just their executive board, together responsible for directing, producing, filming, editing, scriptwriting, anchoring, and managing logistics.
“Personally, one of my favorite parts of MBC has been watching members grow more confident over time, whether that be on camera or off, and bringing their creative ideas to life,” said MBC President Chloe Eng. Chloe is also MBC’s News Director, who, alongside Executive Producer Alexia Mellis and Creative Director Jackson Daly, manage production of episodes. “Most of our board members are seniors, and we really want to leave a mark on this program,” Chloe explained. “By training younger members and really getting them hands-on training, we hope to leave behind a self-sustaining club.”
MBC meets twice a month, usually on Tuesdays, with additional meetings and work sessions scheduled around production timelines. “Something special about the club is that people can choose to participate during the months they have less things to do, like during off-seasons for sports,” said Chloe. “Studio hours reflect that.” MBC’s studio is open every morning during the week, and usually three afternoons a week. Students may use the studio to produce anything, not just Good Morning Manhasset or Set Sports.
At the end of every year, MBC attends BASH (Broadcast Alliance for Senior High) at Hofstra University to celebrate all the achievements from the hard work they’ve produced that year. Email Ms. Dreyer at [email protected] to join the canvas page!
