Manhasset’s weight room, located in the gym, is a place for Manhasset students to work out both in the morning before school and after the school day. Supervised by Mr. Han and Mr. Montesanto, the weight room is open to every student, from grades 7-12.
During the sports season, athletes use the weight room, from the varsity football team in the fall to the wrestlers in the winter. During the school day, students in grades 9-12 who take a fitness training class may also use the weight room.
Weight room advisor Mr. Han gave us a more detailed description of the weight room.
The weight room at Manhasset Secondary School represents far more than physical training; it is an inclusive space where all students, athletes and non-athletes alike, are welcomed, supported, and challenged. It is intentionally designed to meet students where they are, regardless of experience level, ability, or background, and to help them grow safely and confidently.
Within the weight room, students learn to confront challenges in a controlled environment. They are taught how to set goals, follow instruction, respond to feedback, and persevere through difficulty, which are skills that directly translate to the classroom and to life beyond school. Struggle is normalized, effort is valued, and progress is measured not just by strength gains, but by improved focus, accountability, and self-confidence.
The weight room also serves as a community-building space. Students learn responsibility for shared equipment, respect for one another, and the importance of supporting peers. Coaches and teachers use the setting to model leadership, reinforce positive habits, and promote lifelong wellness.
Ultimately, the weight room reflects Manhasset’s commitment to developing the whole student. It is a space where students build physical strength, mental resilience, and character, preparing them to be their best in school, athletics, and the broader community.
