The lights dimmed, eager silence fell over the auditorium, and for one night, Manhasset High School’s auditorium transformed into something more—it became a theater for imagination. Organized by the Manhasset Film Club, the 3rd Annual Manhasset High School Film Festival brought together students, filmmakers, and the community in a celebration of creativity and storytelling.
Film Club advisor Mr. Novak emphasized the significance of both the event and the community behind it. “It’s incredible, the talent that we have at this school,” he said. “We’ve built a community of filmmakers producing such sophisticated work, and I’m excited to showcase that. This festival gives students a space to share their talents, and I’m really grateful to the film club for keeping this tradition running.”
This year’s festival introduced a new element: formal judging. Film Club President Eden Randall describes it as a meaningful addition. “I was super excited for this film festival, especially because it was in a new space and we have a pretty young group,” Randall said. “We implemented judging this year, which I really enjoyed. I was blown away by the creativity everyone showcased.”
Yet, beyond the awards, the festival fostered something deeper—a sense of collective achievement. “Everyone’s a winner tonight,” Randall added. “Submitting alone takes guts. It’s a safe space, and people genuinely enjoy themselves. Hearing the laughs and ‘awws’ from the audience really melts my heart—that’s what film is supposed to do. Bring us together.”
For many participants, including first-time attendees, the experience exceeded expectations. Student filmmaker Jamie Mazzei shared, “I was expecting very creative and diverse films, and that’s exactly what there was.” Reflecting on the evening, Mazzei highlighted the awards ceremony as a standout moment: “It was a very supportive environment, and the anticipation made it even more fun.”
Behind the scenes, the Film Club’s weekly meetings in Room 206 have helped cultivate this growing culture of film. Through movie viewing, film creating, and popcorn eating, students are not only learning technical skills but also developing a creative identity.
And as the Film Club continues to grow, so does its summon—to step behind the camera, take creative risks, and like that night’s energy, run toward something bigger than oneself.
